On alcoholism, Lord of the Rings and smart kids with autism.
- student: What was the worse thing that ever happened to you?
- me: That's a strange question. You really want to know?
- student: Yes.
- me: Okay, well a long time ago my mind, body and soul was taken over by a dark force so cunning, baffling and powerful that I didn't even realize it had happened until it was too late. It made me feel crazy and full of fear yet I was obsessed with it and searched for it in all places and thought of nothing else. Then one day the Universe opened a small frame of time for honesty and I was able to see myself with clear eyes. When I looked I didn't recognize myself and it made me feel very sad and frightened. From that moment on I vowed to rid myself of that dark force. It wasn't easy, my friends carried a weight of my burden, and there were many great battles and adventures on the path but in the end I was able to overcome and rid myself of it.
- student: Wait, so are you Frodo? Because you sound more like Gollum but he didn't have a happy ending and you did.
- me: Ha! You're a very clever kid.
I must be growing up because all I yearn for is the slow life in a pretty place surrounded by family.
